St. Ann, with its pristine waters and natural beauty, has always been a favourite destination for travellers seeking unique experiences. Among the myriad attractions that adorn this picturesque parish, the Firewater Mineral Healing Spring stands out as a hidden gem, offering an extraordinary encounter with nature's mysteries. In this blog post, we recount the captivating journey of discovering this enigmatic mineral spring and the fascinating properties that have captured the attention of visitors for decades. My YouTube channel will feature content showcasing enjoyable adventures in St Ann.

Unveiling the Hidden Gem: The Journey Begins

My love for exploring Jamaica led me to St. Ann, a parish known for its breath-taking landscapes and crystal-clear waters. Having previously bypassed the Firewater Mineral Healing Spring in favour of chasing waterfalls, a change of heart prompted a new adventure. With a sense of curiosity and a desire for something off the beaten path, a decision was made to uncover the secrets of this lesser-known attraction. With Bobo as my trusty travel companion, the journey began in earnest.

A Path Less Travelled: The Route to Discovery

Embarking on a multi-leg expedition, Bob and I navigated a series of transportation modes, starting with a taxi ride to downtown Kingston, followed by a coater bus to Spanish Town, and another taxi to Ocho Rios.

Upon arriving at the outskirts of this vibrant town, a local taxi driver confirmed our destination and led us down a single-lane, potholed dirt road. This was the path less travelled, the threshold to an extraordinary encounter.

A Hidden Oasis:

As we ventured along the path, the landscape gradually shifted, revealing glimpses of vendor shops yet to open for the day. Guided by a chance meeting with an elderly man, we received directions to the mineral spring's location.

The anticipation grew as we approached Windsor Mineral Healing Spring, known colloquially as the Firewater Spring. Welcomed by a young boy who assumed the role of an impromptu tour guide, we were informed that the person in charge was attending to his farm.

With the anticipation building, we walked through various sections until the spring came into view. An elderly gentleman occupied the spring, prompting us to patiently await our turn.

Into the Mystical Waters: Unveiling the Phenomenon

Undeterred, we pressed on, drawn by the allure of the spring's reputed wonders. Upon reaching the spring's premises, their eyes beheld a fascinating sight – a small pool reminiscent of a large Jacuzzi, its surface seemingly aflame.

A natural phenomenon rare and remarkable, the water within could be ignited.

The secret behind this fiery spectacle lay in the water's high sulphur levels and natural gas content.

A Phenomenon of Nature:

The moment finally arrived when we could immerse ourselves in the unique wonders of the Firewater Mineral Healing Spring.

The pool, resembling a generously-sized Jacuzzi, held a captivating secret – its water could be set on fire. This extraordinary phenomenon is attributed to the high levels of sulphur and natural gas present in the water.

The constant pumping of mineral-rich water from beneath the earth, coupled with the need to release excess water, added to the intrigue.

A Surprising Encounter:

As we dipped into the lukewarm pool, Bobo was greeted by an unexpected surprise –Bobo, ever the adventurous one, immersed himself fully, unaware that the water was salty!

Our young guide shared the prospect of a fire massage, a tantalizing experience that involved lying in the water while using a towel that had been submerged and then placed into the flames.

But our early arrival denied us this indulgence, leaving us with the promise of future adventures.

Mystical Healing and Ancient Origins:

The Firewater Mineral Healing Spring boasts not only its flammable properties but also a legacy of mystical healing.

Over the years, visitors have attested to the pool's rejuvenating effects, claiming relief from skin infections and arthritis.

The pond's historical significance as a medical bathing spot for plantation slaves adds a layer of cultural depth to its allure.

The origin of its fiery trait is an intriguing tale dating back some 80 years when Mehala Smith, now affectionately known as Granny May, stumbled upon its combustible secret.

Conclusion:

The Firewater Mineral Healing Spring in St. Ann, Jamaica, stands as a testament to nature's ability to surprise and captivate. Our journey, guided by chance encounters and a thirst for exploration, led us to this enchanting oasis. As we reluctantly bid farewell to the fire-kissed waters, we departed with a newfound appreciation for the hidden gems that await those willing to venture off the well-trodden path. The Firewater Spring's legacy, rooted in both history and mysticism, continues to intrigue and inspire all who are fortunate enough to experience its magic.
