Discovering Johnny Falls

“SOMEDAY I'M GOING TO BE FREE AND I'M GOING TO TRAVEL THE WORLD”

Into the lush mountains of St. Mary I went on my next adventure to Johnny Falls. It is a stunning, hidden jewel in Palmetto Grove, Highgate St. Mary, Jamaica.

I saw a picture of Johnny Fall a few times but I had no name or location of the Fall. Then finally, Mishia told me about a fall in St Mary call Johnny Fall. It was the same fall I had been searching for. She indicated she knew where it was. So on November 7, 2019, I ventured to Highgate St Mary.

My Journey started on Constant Spring road where I took a Highgate taxi in Half Way Tree then continued onto Stony Hill road. The taxi then continues through Golden Spring then Temple Hall. It passed a community called Brandon Hill then Castleton. It then continued into the Devon Pen Community where Ugly River is located.

Just Before you reach the Robert Schumann roundabout, the taxi then turns left on the Westmoreland Bridge making its way towards Highgate. Approach with caution because the road directly after the bridge is loaded with potholes

The taxi kept left making its way to Lewis Store and continues through the town of Clonmel. On the right, we passed Mary Mount High School making our way into the town of Highgate. I then took a taxi to Palmetto Grove.

I asked the driver if he knew Johnny Falls and he said yes. I told him I needed someone to give me a tour of the fall. He then gave me a stop at a house where the person who takes care of the property is located. The caretaker came out and I told him I wanted to explore the fall. He said he was going farming.

I told him I came from Kingston and it would be very disappointing not to see the fall. He said the community has been experiencing a drought so there is not much to see. But I wanted to see it regardless. He then called one of the men from the community to give me a tour.

We then continued to a private property on the left side of the road. I must say, this gem is for sure hidden and untouched. My kind of adventure. My face was busting with a smile.

Highate was experiencing drought for sure. The waterfall was trickling. I was disappointed but I took a few pictures knowing I will return to Palmetto Grove to experience the beauty of Johnny Fall.
