Exploring the Hidden Gems of St. Mary: A Journey to Basin Mumma Waterfall

“Grace be the waterfall in the wild of my mind.” — Unknown

Introduction:

In the age of social media, the allure of undiscovered natural wonders often beckons travelers to embark on quests in search of hidden gems.

Such was my journey to St. Mary, inspired by a decade-old Instagram post showcasing a mesmerizing waterfall nestled in the heart of this Jamaican parish.

Little did I know that this expedition would lead me through winding roads, lonely paths, and unexpected encounters, ultimately unveiling the breathtaking beauty of Basin Mumma Waterfall.

The Quest Begins in Carron Hall:

My adventure began with a quest to find a waterfall featured in a vintage Instagram post.

Armed with the location tag "Carron Hall," I ventured through the picturesque landscapes of St. Mary.

The journey took an unexpected turn when, after reaching Highgate, I realized Carron Hall was not the next stop.

A Serenade in the Hills:

Undeterred, I found myself traversing a lonely road in this remote landscape, with the sun, rhythm of my footsteps and the harmony of nature and blue skies as my companions, I found solace and joy in the simple act of singing along to my favorite tunes.

As I walked the solitary road, the hills of St. Mary unfolded before me, revealing nature's masterpiece—the towering mountains, the gentle breeze caressing my cheeks, and the harmonious melodies of birds echoing through the air.

Despite being alone, the solitude felt like a blissful serenade.

Missteps and Discoveries:

Undeterred, I trekked several miles to Carron Hall High School, where the helpful security guard set me on the right path, directing me towards a bar and shop where locals could provide further assistance.

Upon reaching the bar, I presented the image of the elusive waterfall to a group of young men. To my surprise, they identified it as being in White Spring, a nearby community.

Eager to explore, I was introduced to Hazard Waterfall, touted as the highest waterfall in Jamaica. Nonsuch waterfall in Portland currently has that status.

Despite their initial hesitance, the young men agreed to guide me, and our journey commenced through challenging terrain—navigating cow faeces, overcoming barbed wire, and battling overgrown bushes

Rescue on the Lonely Road:

Our efforts were in vain, as the path had vanished due to nature's reclamation leaving us to retrace our steps.

We returned to the lonely road, walking under the scorching sun, our fortunes changed when a distant sound heralded the arrival of a truck.

With gratitude, I hopped in, leaving the young farmers behind. I bid farewell to my newfound companions, ready to uncover the secrets that awaited.

The Enchantment of Basin Mumma:

Upon reaching White Spring, I sought guidance at a local shop, discovering not one but six waterfalls—Baptism, Hanna, Broadleaf, Basin Mumma, Basin Puppa, and Basin Waterfall.

Despite initial setbacks in finding a guide, fate intervened, and a young man agreed to accompany me.

Basin Mumma Waterfall, with its lime-green waters glistening in the sunlight, unfolded before me like a magical oasis.

The experience was nothing short of enchanting, leaving me spellbound by the beauty of this hidden gem.

Connections and Reflections:

As I reflect on my journey through St. Mary, I realize that travel is not merely about reaching a destination but about the connections made along the way.

The bonds formed at White Spring Waterfalls are indelible, surpassing any I've experienced in Jamaica.

Basin Mumma Waterfall, with its ethereal beauty, has etched itself into my memories, leaving me in awe of St. Mary's secrets.

Conclusion:

St. Mary, with its winding paths, unexpected encounters, and hidden waterfalls, has become more than a destination—it is a journey of enchantment, discovery, and connection.

Basin Mumma Waterfall stands as a testament to the surprises that unfold when we venture off the beaten path, reminding us that the true beauty of travel lies in the unexpected gems we uncover along the way.
