While scrolling through Instagram, I found another reason to go exploring in Portland. I fell in love with nature all over again. I had no idea how to find this hidden gem but google came to my rescue like always.

I ensured I had a picture of the location, swimwear, money and a positive attitude. On September 8, 2018, I went searching for Spanish River in a community call Cheptowe in Buff Bay Portland.

I took the Junction route to Portland. Upon reaching Anotto Bay, I took a taxi to Buff Bay. Then I asked the driver where can I get a taxi to Chepstowe.

He directed me to the supermarket across from the taxi stand. A young lady was also standing at the supermarket.

I asked her if she knew the Spanish River she said no. Then I showed her a picture and instantly she said yes. She told me she wasn’t going to that part of the community. I decided to ask the chepwstowe taxi driver for assistance.

Ten minutes later a taxi came and a young man also approached the taxi. I ask the driver if he knew anyone that would be interested to give me a tour of Spanish River and he said no but the young man that goes by the name Junior knew where it was but he was busy. Then I offered to compensate him and his price was JMD1, 000.00 and I accepted.

We did a mini hike to the falls which was about 20 minutes. I must admit, taking so many pictures caused the hike to be that long. We pass through a coffee farm that belongs to the Marley Family. It’s on this farm the brand Marley Coffee is grown.

A little history on the Marley Family. Ziggy Marley donates parts of his proceeds from his album which was released in 2009 called Family Tree to the basic school in the Chepstowe community. The Marley family is loved by everyone in the community. They have created employment, access to the river and fruits on the property at no cost.

We walked down an old block of steps that seemed to have been there for ages, to get down to the Spanish River. Finally, we saw the river which flows out of the John Crow Mountains over the huge rocks creating a swimming area underneath the small concealed jewel of a waterfall.

This section of the Spanish River is called Big Dun. How is this place even real? I was star struck by its beauty. Let me tell you a little secret about me, I love hidden destinations. Love being alone with nature and capturing it on camera. It just brings me joy. This place is just right for me. I will forever return.

If you want to meditate, relax, rejuvenate, love untouched gems, just want to spend time with family and friends, Big Dun Falls in the Portland is the place to visit.

I explored another hidden gem with the help of Junior, who was going on his farm and took time out of his busy day to give me a tour of Big Dunn Falls in Chepstowe Buff Bay Portland.
