One of the oldest parishes in Jamaica is St Elizabeth. Most of the western section of Jamaica was St Elizabeth so in 1703 and 1814 it was split to form parts of Westmoreland and Manchester. The wife of Sir Thomas Modyford, Governor of Jamaica between 1664 and 1671 was Lady Elizabeth Modyford. St Elizabeth was named in honour of her.
