The untouched and remote Dornoch River Head

“I would rather own a little and see the world than own the world and see a little of it.” ~ Alexander Sattler

Seeing places that hardly exist on social media if not at all is a wonderful feeling when I explore Jamaica. It makes me value and adores remote areas. Travelling to where few have been is an amazing experience. There are so many beautiful spots hidden in Jamaica; trust me. These untouched places entice me. They fill my heart with joy that I can’t even explain.

Googling places to visit in Jamaica and stumbled upon a beautiful picture of a lady smiling, holding a rope in a blue-green body of water. I felt all kinds of amazing feelings. Instantly, this place was somewhere I wanted to visit.

Base on my research, I found out it was called Dornorch River Head in Trelawny. For me, that was all the information I needed with a couple of photos of the location.

I decide on March 10, 2018, I took a St Ann coater bus from downtown Kingston to Oho Rios. Then a minivan from Ocho Rios to Browns Town.

There are buses in downtown Kingston that goes straight to Browns Town but I would have to wait a very long time before the bus was full of passengers and I didn’t have that much time.

I met a beautiful soul on the bus from Kingston to Ocho Rios. We then took the bus together from Ocho Rios and her final stop was in St Ann’s Bay.

We talked about the different places I have visited. She was amazed that I did most of my exploring alone. She was impressed but also she encouraged me to be careful of my surrounding and people.

We keep each other’s company for around two and a half hours. She spoke about her mother. I felt how much she love her.

Upon arriving in Brown Town, I asked the driver where do I get a taxi to Stewart Town Taxi.

I went in that direction showed to me b the driver of the minivan where I heard a loud voice, “ Stewart Town Trelawny, One an move,” I ran quickly to taxi and told the driver I wanted a stop that would lead me to Dornoch River Head. He said my final stop would be at crossroads.

On my way to Crossroad, I ask the driver if he knew any that was interest in being my tour guide. He said no but there are always people hanging around that I could ask.

When I got to Dornorch, no one was in sight. I made a right turn, heading north until I saw a shop where I asked for assistance.

None of the men was willing to be my tour guide. They instead directed me to a house where I would find a young man who was willing to give me a tour of the river.

I love touring with kids. They are free-spirited and fun. I was happy that the older men rejected my proposal. Our journey started at his house. He made a stop to call his friend. Hence the three of us made our way to this untouched gem.

We passed the Webb Memorial Baptist Church founded in 1829 by Rev. J. T. Mann and the Stewart Town Primary school before making our way into the bushes which were a shorter journey to the river.

Some parts of the journey were covered with rocks so ensure you have proper footwear. These boys were so use to the area they cold walk barefoot without any issues.

We had conversations about their grades in school, girls, where they lived before Stewart Town became their new home. They couldn’t stop talking. I loved every minute of it. I realized they enjoyed my company just as much as I enjoyed there’s.

I encouraged them to keep working hard and they replied, “Yes miss, we will”. This is what I love about travelling. The amazing feeling I get when I can encourage individuals to never give up no matter how bad the situation is. Just use it as a source of motivation.

The first sight of the blue-green water moved ever hair on my body. It was an awesome feeling. I was a man finishing his laundry in the river. He told us to be safe.

I was lucky because I got to see the river at its best. My tour guides told me the river can get muddy.

According to Alan Fincham the author of “Jamaica Underground" the largest river rising in Jamaica is Dornoch River Head. It is the source of water for Quashies River and the Cave River that flows underground.

As always I took loads of pictures before enjoying the water. I had a blast right after. The mosquitos were out in their numbers. But I had a great time regardless. I had my mosquito repellent so if you plan on visiting, make sure it’s the first thing you pack.

My trip to Stewart town Trelawny is one of my best solo trip to date. Stay around. I took a lot of pictures. You will be very happy you did.
