“You don’t learn to walk by following rules. You learn by doing, and by falling over.” – Richard Branson
Have you ever started your day with breakfast at a historic ruin and ended it with a mouthwatering lunch by a serene river? Well, I had the incredible opportunity to embark on such an adventure recently, thanks to an invitation from my friend Abby. From the picturesque Colbeck Castle ruins in Old Harbour to the tranquil oasis of Goldmine River in Clarendon, this day was a feast for the senses in more ways than one. My YouTube channel will feature content showcasing enjoyable adventures in St Catherine
Breakfast at the Ruins: Colbeck Castle A Journey to Remember
To reach Old Harbour to meet up with the crew, I embarked on a journey from Kingston, taking a coaster bus to Spanish Town and then a taxi to Old Harbour.
Upon arrival, I rendezvoused with Abby and the rest of our adventure crew which consisted of Abby's cousin, the amazing chef Patrice, Abby's significant other Mario, their friend Jae in the picturesque town of Old Harbour St Catherine.
The adventure truly commenced as we hopped into Patrice's car and headed towards our first destination which was Colbeck Castle where we had breakfast like king and queens.
The spread was nothing short of creative: fresh pineapple, cantaloupe, and melon were beautifully complemented by the crunch of banana chips as sandwich toppings.
But the star of the morning was undoubtedly the tuna and corn beef sandwiches that Patrice whipped up, accompanied by a soothing cup of cinnamon leaf tea.
The aromatic cinnamon leaf tea added a delightful twist to the meal, and of course, Excelsior crackers, my personal favorite, made an appearance
As we indulged in this unique breakfast, the atmosphere was made even more enjoyable by the company.
Laughter, music, and stories filled the air, making it feel as if we'd known each other for ages.
The blazing sun couldn't deter our spirits, especially with the shade of a few friendly trees to provide relief.
Exploring the Ruins: A Natural Oasis
After savoring the scrumptious breakfast and soaking in the historical charm of Colbeck Castle, we packed our belongings and set off to explore the castle grounds.
The castle's echoes of the past and breathtaking views made for an unforgettable experience.
Swiftly snapping pictures, we then embarked on the next leg of our adventure, driving to Goldmine River in Clarendon.
Culinary Magic by the River
Arriving at Goldmine River, the anticipation was palpable.
Our group gathered all the necessary supplies for our riverside culinary escapade: fish, chicken, pots, knives, and a medley of natural seasonings.
Abby and I stole a moment to capture a breathtaking view by the main road before venturing to the river's entrance.
Here, we joined Patrice's significant other, the second chef of the day, and embarked on a hike that led us down a steep hill Abby and I reminiscent of our previous escapades in the hills of Jamaica.
Our hike down a steep hill, while reminiscent of other challenging hikes, was a testament to our determination and camaraderie.
Taking our time to avoid slipping on the slippery path, we knew the journey was as important as the destination.
Slowly but surely, we made our way to the stunning Goldmine River.
The rush of adrenaline mingled with the awe-inspiring beauty of nature, creating an experience akin to the first sight of paradise.
The sight that greeted us at the river was exhilarating. Nature's beauty flowed in abundance, as did the adrenaline coursing through our veins.
As we took in the view, Patrice set to work, showcasing her culinary prowess time in preparing a mouthwatering meal against the picturesque backdrop.
Capturing Patrice's culinary prowess on camera was a must, and the resulting pictures were nothing short of stunning.
Meanwhile, we rewarded ourselves with a refreshing swim, washing away the fatigue from our descent.
Abby delighted in the natural water slide, her joy captured in every snapshot.
The images of Patrice's cooking were nothing short of stunning.
A Feast for the Senses
The culmination of the day's adventures arrived with the sumptuous lunch that Patrice had crafted.
The fried snapper fish and a medley of boiled delicacies were simply phenomenal.
Though I abstained from the chicken, my fellow adventurers attested to its deliciousness.
With satisfied bellies and a sense of calm induced by a meditative session with some "Zombie herbs," a well-deserved rest beckoned.
As the afternoon sun hung lazily in the sky, the river provided a backdrop for relaxation and introspection.
Some succumbed to slumber, while others engaged in conversations that flowed as easily as the river beside us.
The arrival of Patrice's brother in a four-wheel drive for the return journey was a welcome surprise, making the journey back far smoother than anticipated.
Goldmine River's Hidden Gems
Reflecting on the day, I can't help but marvel at the unique beauty of Goldmine River.
The golden-hued rocks, interspersed with inviting natural pools, create a haven of tranquility.
I'm left yearning to witness the river's full splendor after a heavy rainfall, when the island will undoubtedly unveil an even more enchanting side.
In the end, this day of culinary and natural exploration was an immersive experience that touched all the senses.
From the historic ruins to the riverside feasting, nature's allure, and the skillful hands of a gifted chef.
As I left Goldmine River with memories etched in my heart, I couldn't help but marvel at the beauty and diversity that Jamaica has to offer.
