That Time I wasn't at a Waterfall

“Whatever you do, don’t get stuck in routine.”

After visiting the Bull Head Mountains, we continued our Instagram adventure with travel bloggers Rochelle (@adventuresfromelle) and Khadeem (@irie_Khadeem) at Colbeck Castle. Rochelle and Khadeem have done me a great service by shedding light on a previously unknown period of Jamaican history.

Rochelle and Khadeem have done me a great service by shedding light on a previously unknown period of Jamaican history. Unfortunately, there was no guard on duty when we arrived, so we only had a few minutes to take pictures before we had to leave.

I decided to look into the castle's past because I was intrigued by it. Colbeck Castle, St. Catherine, is located in the country about two miles north of Old Harbour. The castle, which was built in 1680, is currently owned by the Jamaica National Heritage Trust.

The building rises to a height of roughly 40 feet and has a rectangular layout with tower-like structures that rise four stories at each corner. It was probably around this time that Colbeck Castle was constructed, with the express purpose of protecting English colonies from Spanish invasion.

Choosing the Palladio style for this structure was a conscious choice. It looks like a massive palace straight out of the seventeenth century Italy. Disrepair has set in on the building for some time now. The walls that are still standing, however, attest to the building's former glory.
